Why Orange?

I've chosen orange as my official campaign color because it is fast becoming a symbol for change in politics -- a shift away from back-room deal making and toward an open style of governance that respects and listens to citizens.

It started with the election of Viktor Yushchenko as president of Ukraine. He was lifted into power by the people of that nation, who banded together in what would become known as "The Orange Revolution." Their message was simple: They wanted an end to status quo in a notoriously corrupt nation. They wanted change. They wanted democracy.

More recently, Democratic candidate John Yarmouth used orange as a symbol for change when he ran successfully in a race to unseat a ten-year incumbent to represent Louisville, Kentucky, in the United States House of Representatives. He ran against the business-as-usual politics of his opponent, and he won.

Of course, Kansas City isn't Ukraine or Louisville. And perhaps "revolution" is too strong of a word. But I embrace the spirit of these campaigns.

My goal -- our goal together -- is to make Kansas City a city that works for regular folks. To do that, City Hall is going to have to start making some serious changes in the way it conducts business. I'm running for mayor because I'm a Kansas Citian, and I want to make this change happen.

That's why my campaign color is orange -- the color for change.
